- Commercial three-phase inverters carry a five-year factory term; residential and Smart Energy lines start at five and extend automatically to ten on registration within the stated window. Paid extensions are sold in blocks up to a maximum total that differs by model. Utility products run five years with extensions in five-year steps. SMA's standard support obligations are tiered by country and the UAE sits in the mid tier, so the applicable service level should be confirmed in writing.
SMA has built inverters since 1981 and covers the whole range — residential string units, commercial three-phase, 1500 V utility central inverters, battery inverters and complete medium-voltage stations. It publishes derating data and environmental classifications more openly than most of its competitors, which is what makes it straightforward to design against a Gulf summer. It has run a Middle East subsidiary out of Dubai since 2012.
Why it gets specified
- SMA publishes the ambient band, the ingress rating and the IEC 61701 corrosivity class on the datasheet itself, so a coastal or high-humidity site can be specified from public documents instead of a sales conversation.
- Derating onset depends strongly on DC operating voltage, and SMA publishes that relationship — meaning string length is a design lever for summer output, not just a stringing convenience.
- Utility central inverters are sold with a stated full-power ambient temperature and a published derating figure at higher ambients, so a plant's summer capacity can be modelled honestly at tender stage.
- Residential and commercial lines extend from five years to ten automatically on registration, and can be extended further in blocks — an in-service cost that can be quantified at purchase rather than discovered in year six.
- A solar-specific Dubai subsidiary with its own published service line, which is a different proposition from a general electrical brand that also sells inverters.

On a UAE project
SMA earns its place on a UAE project when the consultant wants the environmental case written down: the corrosivity class, the ingress rating and the ambient band are on the datasheet, so a coastal site at Mina Zayed or an industrial site near a cement works can be justified on paper rather than on assurance. Be precise about the central-inverter derating — full rated power is quoted at a moderate ambient and the published output at 50 °C is meaningfully lower, which is a modelling input, not a defect, and any competitor without a published curve is simply not telling you. On the MV station, the ambient band is an order option, so specifying the extreme-ambient variant at purchase is far cheaper than discovering the standard band in the second summer. Against Chinese supply the honest trade is lead time and landed cost versus documentation depth and a Dubai service line that has existed since 2012.
